About Us

Hospital for Special Care (HSC) is, a private, not-for-profit 228-bed rehabilitation long-term acute and chronic care hospital, widely-known and respected for its expertise in physical rehabilitation (including outpatient rehabilitation), respiratory care and medically-complex pediatrics. Special programs for spinal cord injuries, pulmonary rehabilitation, acquired brain injuries, stroke, ventilator management and geriatrics, make HSC an important regional resource for patients with special healthcare needs.


HSC Resources

Today, HSC resources include a 27,000 square foot Aquatic Rehabilitation Center, with two wheelchair-accessible pools - a warm-water pool for aquatic therapy and cooler pool for fitness and recreation - as well as a modern fitness center with the latest cardiovascular and strength-training equipment. The Hospital's continuum of care also includes Brittany Farms Health Center, a 284-bed healthcare facility specializing in subacute rehabilitation and long-term care.

Hospital for Special Care enjoys accreditation from The Joint Commission (TJC), the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). In addition, HSC is affiliated with numerous clinical facilities in the region, including the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.

HSC also offers numerous support groups for patients and families affected by arthritis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, stroke, head injury, Parkinson's disease, and pulmonary conditions.

When people come to us, they have extraordinary needs that require special care. They may need rehabilitation services after they have had a serious injury or accident, suffered a stroke or developed complicated medical conditions. They may require intensive respiratory care. Or they may be children who have complex medical conditions or are dependent on technology.

At Hospital for Special Care we have a dedicated staff and innovative programs for those special needs—and more. Our Health and Fitness programs pay particular attention to the needs and desires of people with disabilities to participate in recreational and competitive sports. Our Aquatic Rehabilitation Center is fully accessible and features rehabilitative and fitness programs for people of all physical abilities.
