Auxiliary & Volunteers

Our rich tradition of caring—an integral piece in our Hospital for Special Care mission is at the heart of our volunteer program. Volunteer commitment to Hospital for Special Care has been a lifetime effort by an astonishing number of devoted individuals.

Our volunteers add that extra special caring dimension to our healthcare team at Hospital for Special Care. Their efforts complement the function of the professional staff, enhancing the comfort and quality of each patient's stay, making a highly positive impact on patients, family members, visitors and hospital employees alike.

Volunteers serve the Hospital for Special Care in three major areas: as community friends, providing administrative support; and the Hospital for Special Care Auxiliary.

Over an almost 50-year history, and through initiatives like The Little Store gift shop, Special Care Corner Thrift Shop and the greenhouse, our HSC Auxiliary volunteers have always been "visionaries at heart." They are a very special and committed group of people who continue to share their time, talents, ideas and energy to help others.

Volunteers range in age from 14 to 80+, and hail from over 40 towns and cities in Connecticut.

Applicants are screened, accepted, oriented and trained in compliance with corporate, HIPAA and JCAHO requirements. Exciting volunteer opportunities are always available for adults and youth.

Garden Volunteer Opportunities

We are seeking volunteers for 2 exciting positions. The Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit at Hospital for Special Care wishes to have volunteers to assist the patients in their Garden Club. The volunteer(s) would help the patients take care of plants and flowers they have grown and help them cultivate new plants and flowers. The Garden Club meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-3 p.m.

We also need a group of volunteers experienced in gardening and planting to grow, tend to, and maintain plants around the Hospital for Special Care grounds. We will provide the seeds, areas, and support.

Please call Volunteer Services at 827-1958 ext. 5783 if you are interested in these positions.

The only therapeutic horseback riding center in central Connecticut and a member of the Hospital for Special Care Community, Manes and Motions Therapeutic Riding Center is at Wedgewood Stables in Kensington, offering children and adults living with cognitive and physical disabilities the opportunity to enjoy horseback riding for therapeutic, recreational, sport and educational purposes.

This wonderful opportunity and the magical connection and therapeutic value of horses will open up a whole new world for our children and adults involved in the disabled sports and fitness programs at Hospital for Special Care. Volunteers and dedicated staff are key to the meteoric growth and success of Manes & Motions.

Therapeutic riding and its benefits have been documented for many years, going as far back as 1875. It has long been known that the human-animal bond is a powerful force in human emotions, and it is one of the most important elements of the program. In addition to the emotional benefits, therapeutic riding is proven to improve muscle tone, head control, improved mobility, coordination, physical strength, confidence and self-esteem.

During each session riders enjoy a variety of games and activities designed for horseback, which motivate the rider and provide opportunities for meeting physical, cognitive, behavioral and psychological goals. The addition of therapeutic riding has the potential to expand our sports, leadership and training program in a variety of ways.
